Damn It If You're Not Right
by mcgeorge
I recently watched 2046 (since I adore Happy Together, Chungking Express, and In the Mood for Love). Throughout it all I was enraptured, knowing full well that it was watching a Wong Kar-wai film from the first frame. He is in a rut, but there aren't too many great directors who get beyond what made them great in the first place. Scorsese and Spielberg? Truffaut or Godard? Kurosawa or Ozu? There aren't many who escape themselves since the autuer movement took over (even the some of the greats from past eras like Hitchcock got caught). I will say, though, you could do worse than looking through Wong's amazing eye over and over again...

I also loved 2046. Like a lot of WKW movies, it started out slow, but gathered momentum as it went along. By the time it ended you almost didn't want it to end.

The review is excellent though. One of the more illuminating movie reviews I've read in a long time. I think Wong Kar Wei will be like Woody Allen. An excellent film maker doomed to be forever making the same movie ove and over.
