Vaccines are far and away the most effective measure against flu of any kind, given that it's a virus and that the efficacy of anti-viral treatments lags well behind prevention.

No, not an argument against "them", which is circular, but against the motive for war and/or the type of war. "Them" and "war" are two different things. The purpose of vaccines isn't to prevent death but to prevent bad health. You don't base efficacy of the vaccine in the number of deaths it prevents but on whether people get the flu or not.
