Sources: House Health Bill Totals $1.2 Trillion

Democrats added billions in higher spending for public health, a reinsurance program to hold down retiree health costs, payments for preventive services and more

WASHINGTON -- The health care bill headed for a vote in the House this week costs $1.2 trillion or more over a decade, according to numerous Democratic officials and figures contained in an analysis by congressional budget experts, far higher than the $900 billion cited by President Barack Obama as a price tag for his reform plan.

While the Congressional Budget Office has put the cost of expanding coverage in the legislation at roughly $1 trillion, Democrats added billions more on higher spending for public health, a reinsurance program to hold down retiree health costs, payments for preventive services and more.

Many of the additions are designed to improve benefits or ease access to coverage in government programs. The officials who provided overall cost estimates did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss them.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has referred repeatedly to the bill's net cost of $894 billion over a decade for coverage...

I favor single payer 100% of the way. Take all the premiums paid into the insurance industry and give it to Medicare and insure everyone, overnight. This bill is not going to do the trick at all. Republicans and insurance lobbies got what they wanted, a monstrosity which can allow them to keep the status quo for ever.

Having said that, I favor the bill in the House now. It ain't anywhere near perfect. And I suspect that fixing it will be the number one domestic agenda item of the next decade.

But passing it will end the era of the current unregulated system.

Once big insurance is shoved through that door, there's no turing back.

Conservatives advocate crippling the nation's economy with an expensive, institutionally corrupt, and murderously ineffecient and unfair health care financing system that eats up 30% of every health care dollar in profits and adminstration.

We pay twice as much as the next most expensive health care sytem on the planet and get less for it.

A privately financed health care system that takes good care of the rich, mediocre care of the middle and neglects the poor completely is a hallmark of third world economies. That's what we have here, and that's what the GOP is fighting to save.

People who die in this country for lack of health insurance would be treated cheaply and fairly in every other industrialized country in the world.

And they would live longer.

In fact, people in Cuba live longer.

Couple this with the tax policies of the last thirty years, in which we saw a shift away from the egalitarian income distribution that enabled and empowered the American middle class, back to the uneven exteme concentration of wealth typical of America in the robber baron age.

Add to it the "crony capitalism" and Hardingesque corruption of the Republican Congress and the Bush adminstration, and the pattern is very clear.

Conservative like the beat thier chests and try and outdo one another when it comes to parochial chauvanism.

But when it comes to preparing the nation to face the future, they're not interested.

In GOP circles, 2000 looked like 1920, that they conducted themselves accordingly.

We threw away the respect of the world, the quality of our military, our moral leadership, and our economy in the interim.

So, when I talk about conservatives wanting to turn the US into a second rate bananna republic, I have no shortage of examples.
